DMA meets Police Commissioner against rising violence on medical professionals, demands safety measures

A delegation of the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) on Thursday met Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and submitted a memorandum addressing rising incidents of violence against medical professionals. According to the press release, the points discussed in the meeting include, raising awareness among police personnel about the Prevention of Violence Against Medical Professionals Act, 2008. Mandatory provision of institutional FIR in cases of violence. Establishment of dedicated crisis number in each district to deal with violence against healthcare professionals.
According to the release, the DMA said, "Regular awareness meetings are being held with the police leadership to promote cooperation and safety." The doctors' delegation included Alok Bhandari, Prakash Lalchandani, VK Monga, Sunil Singhal and Satish Lamba of the Delhi Medical Association. On September 9, a female postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident led to nationwide protests by doctors and interns demanding justice for the victim and increased safety measures for medical professionals. Sanjoy Roy, a civilian volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
